Chemical energetics: describe question

Describe5 marksStandard

A student has data for the standard enthalpy changes of combustion of carbon (graphite), hydrogen and ethane. She wants to use these values, together with Hess's law, to determine the standard enthalpy change of formation of ethane without doing a direct experiment.

Describe, in words, how the combustion enthalpy values can be used to obtain the enthalpy change of formation of ethane. Include in your answer the basis of Hess's law and the substances involved in the energy cycle. Do not carry out any calculation.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
