Chemistry of transition elements: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

Two copper(II) complexes are formed from the hexaaquacopper(II) ion in aqueous solution.

Complex A: [Cu(HX2O)X6]X2++4 NHX3→[Cu(NHX3)X4(HX2O)X2]X2++4 HX2O\ce{[Cu(H2O)6]^{2+} + 4NH3 -> [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]^{2+} + 4H2O}

Complex B: [Cu(HX2O)X6]X2++2 en→[Cu(en)X2]X2++6 HX2O\ce{[Cu(H2O)6]^{2+} + 2en -> [Cu(en)2]^{2+} + 6H2O} (where en = 1,2-diaminoethane, a bidentate ligand)

Compare the stability constants, KstabK_\text{stab}, for the formation of Complex A and Complex B. In your answer:

  • write an expression for the KstabK_\text{stab} of [Cu(en)X2]X2+\ce{[Cu(en)2]^{2+}}
  • state which complex has the larger KstabK_\text{stab}
  • explain why this complex has a larger KstabK_\text{stab}
  • describe how the KstabK_\text{stab} values relate to the position of equilibrium in each ligand exchange.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
