Equilibria: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A buffer solution can be prepared by mixing a weak acid with its conjugate base. An example is the ethanoic acid / sodium ethanoate buffer. The bicarbonate buffer system in blood uses carbonic acid, HX2COX3\ce{H2CO3}, and hydrogencarbonate ions, HCOX3X−\ce{HCO3-}.

Compare the way these two buffer systems control pH when small amounts of acid or base are added.

In your answer, include:

  • relevant chemical equations for each system
  • an explanation of the roles of conjugate acid–base pairs

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
