Organic synthesis: suggest question

Suggest6 marksChallenge

A student plans to prepare propylamine, CHX3CHX2CHX2NHX2\ce{CH3CH2CH2NH2}, starting from 1-chloropropane, CHX3CHX2CHX2Cl\ce{CH3CH2CH2Cl}. The student suggests heating 1-chloropropane with an excess of ammonia dissolved in ethanol in a sealed tube.

Suggest why an excess of ammonia is used, and state the reagent and conditions needed to convert the initial product into propylamine. Also suggest one possible by-product of this reaction and explain how it forms.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Suggest means: Apply what you know to an unfamiliar situation. There may be more than one acceptable answer. Reason from the principle you have learned to the new context, and say which principle you are using.
