Cell structure: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

A student prepared a temporary mount of an onion root tip and observed cells using a light microscope. A separate sample of the same root tip was viewed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The light micrograph showed cell walls and nuclei clearly, while the TEM micrograph revealed details of organelles such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum.

Describe why the transmission electron microscope is able to resolve much finer details than the light microscope.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
