Chemical energetics: describe question

Describe6 marksChallenge

When NaCl\ce{NaCl} dissolves in water, the enthalpy change of solution, ΔHextsol\Delta H_ ext{sol}, is +3.9 kJ mol−1^{-1}. The enthalpy change of hydration of NaX+\ce{Na+} is −406-406 kJ mol−1^{-1} and that of ClX−\ce{Cl-} is −364-364 kJ mol−1^{-1}. The lattice energy of NaCl\ce{NaCl} is −776-776 kJ mol−1^{-1}.

Describe, in words, an energy cycle that links ΔHextsol\Delta H_ ext{sol} to the lattice energy and the enthalpy changes of hydration of the two ions. In your description, define enthalpy change of solution and explain how the numerical values given are related in the cycle.

How this question is marked

6 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 6 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Describe means: Say what happens or what something is like, in order and with detail. You are not being asked why. If there is data, quote it: name the trend, then give figures with units at the points where it changes.
