Organic synthesis: compare question

Compare5 marksStandard

A colourless liquid, X, is known to contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only. A student carries out three tests on separate samples of X.

Test 1: Sodium hydrogencarbonate is added. Effervescence is observed. Test 2: A few drops of acidified potassium dichromate(VI) are added and the mixture is warmed. An orange to green colour change is observed. Test 3: Tollens' reagent is added and the mixture is warmed. A silver mirror forms.

Compare what these three results tell the student about the functional groups present in X, and state what further test could be carried out to confirm the presence of the functional group suggested by Test 1.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Compare means: Give similarities or differences between two things, and say which side each point belongs to. Write each point as a pair, for example: A is X, whereas B is Y. Two separate descriptions rarely earn the marks.
