Cell structure: explain question

Explain5 marksChallenge

A student prepared a temporary mount of onion epidermal cells and observed them using a light microscope. The student took a photomicrograph on which a scale bar was added. On the print, the scale bar measures 40 mm in length and represents an actual length of 20 μm. One of the cells in the photomicrograph measures 80 mm in length on the print.

(a) Explain how the student could use the scale bar to determine the actual length of this cell.

(b) Explain the difference between resolution and magnification, and state why an electron microscope can reveal more detail than a light microscope.

How this question is marked

5 marks, so the mark scheme is looking for about 5 separate creditworthy points. Making the same point twice in different words earns it once.

Explain means: Give the reasons or the mechanism: why or how something happens. Link each point to the next with because, so or which means. A list of facts with no links usually loses the reasoning marks.
